Diastema closure
The diastema, a term generally used to describe a gap between teeth that should normally be touching, sometimes causes embarrassment for some people. They don’t like their smile, and don’t dare to show it off. Fortunately, there are solutions to correct the situation. But first, let’s take a closer look at the causes of diastema.
Why a gap between teeth?
There are a number of possible reasons for a diastema. For example, you may have inherited small teeth from one of your parents. A simpler reason may be the absence of one or more teeth, naturally causing a diastema. Still among the physical causes, the existence of a labial frenulum too close to the incisors can hinder the closing of the space between the teeth.
How do I close a diastema?
Would you like to put an end to all this? Fortunately, a dental professional can suggest different solutions, depending on your budget or preferences.
Composite resin
Also known as « bonding », composite resin can be used to fill the gap between your teeth. It’s an economical solution, but often short-lived, as it can be easily damaged. What’s more, if you smoke or drink red wine or coffee, the composite resin may change color over time and will need to be replaced more frequently. This technique has the advantage of being less costly and less invasive, since the dentist simply adds composite to the space between the teeth.
Dental veneers
Dental veneers can be used to camouflage diastemas. Using a special adhesive, the dentist places thin porcelain plates on the front of the teeth. This is a more invasive solution, since a thin layer of teeth must be removed to create the space needed for the porcelain. Veneers are used when the shape or color of teeth needs to be altered, or if teeth are badly damaged. Porcelain dental veneers last longer than composites, and do not change color over time or with food.
Freinectomy
If your labial frenulum is the cause of your diastema, a freinectomy may be the treatment option for you. This procedure involves reducing the size of the labial frenulum. However, this procedure is not 100% effective in adults and must be combined with other treatment, such as braces.
Orthodontics
If you have a large gap between your teeth, you may want to consider orthodontics. A dentist or orthodontist may recommend metal braces or invisible orthodontics. More expensive, this treatment has the advantage of offering long-lasting, permanent results, without having to modify the natural surface of your teeth. When teeth are properly shaped and healthy, this option is definitely the most advantageous.
