Mouth guard
A comfortable, durable device, the mouthguard is a removable dental appliance that fits over the upper teeth to help prevent sports injuries to teeth and gums. Mouthguards also protect against tooth impact or clenching during sports activities.
Almost any strenuous physical activity can cause injury to the teeth, jaw and lips. However, some sports are more risky than others, such as field hockey, soccer, boxing and basketball. While mouthguards won’t provide risk-free protection, they can help reduce the risk of concussion.
What is a concussion?
A concussion is a change in brain function resulting from a blow or impact to the head or jaw that causes movement of the brain within the skull. This movement causes a biochemical imbalance in the brain cells. A concussion does not automatically lead to loss of consciousness, but can include symptoms such as disorientation, poor coordination and even blurred vision. Concussion in sports is a major problem. Wearing a mouthguard is therefore recommended when playing certain sports.

At the Fortin Poirier Dental Clinic, we offer you a custom-made mouthguard. Manufactured from precise models of your teeth, using a multi-layer lamination system, MaxxgardTM offers you the following benefits: high protection, remarkable comfort, easy breathing and clear speech. The MaxxgardTM mouthguard also offers you superior protection and a higher degree of adaptability thanks to the special properties of its material, ethylvinyl acetate. This unique material provides :
- Precise thickness control in critical areas.
- Perfect fit.
- High shock absorption.
- Maximum comfort.
- Occlusal registration for optimal jaw positioning.
- A wide range of colors.
It’s important to remember, however, that the right mouthguard won’t last forever, and will need to be replaced after two or three years… or if it’s torn, worn or thinned prematurely. Mouthguard maintenance can be carried out using a conventional dental cleaning product. Simply rinse with cold water after each use and clean occasionally with toothpaste and cold water.
